From Dualism to Trinity
My very smart sister read my Body, Mind, Love post. She pointed out something very important. She said you are a soul whose mind tells the brain/body what to do. Exactly! And she quoted C.S.Lewis-you are a soul, you have a body.
So if I were to evolve the pyramid that I outlined in Body, Mind, Love , I would put soul at the top of the pyramid and body and mind on either side.
The soul never dies. It trumps body and mind. It's pure energy, always growing, moving, and evolving. The inner is expressed in the outer, so as you grow and evolve, then outer consciousness grows and evolves as well. As you advance spiritually, so does the world.
If the energy of your soul is blocked, or stuck, then it manifests as depression, or anxiety, or a physical illness. Have you ever experienced a depression only to come out of it by taking a huge spiritual leap forward? Sometimes that is the purpose of depression, to tap you on the shoulder and remind you that you are spiritually stuck. You need to grow. It's your souls way of getting your attention, and sometimes an episode of depression can be averted by answering the call of negative emotion in a more timely fashion, as in the moment a negative emotion occurs.
A few months ago I was listening to an interview on NPR with the principal ballet dancer of The American Ballet Theater, Misty Copeland. The interviewer was quoting various rave reviews of Misty, many of which waxed poetic about her unusual and athletic dancers physique, but one reviewer nailed it. He said watching Misty dance on stage was akin to watching her soul. Her soul came alive through
her body, and watching her dance was an intimate, though transcendent experience.
If only all of us could manifest our souls so eloquently through our physical body! But that is why we are here! We are here to manifest the truth of our souls, through the physicality of our bodies, mediated by our minds. We are here to become the Word made manifest.
So many times we hear that people are dualistic. We are body/mind, mind/body. We have body/mind medicine, and some medical doctors that understand the body/mind "phenomenon". But I think we are three! We are a Trinity, we are three in one. Our soul communicates with us via the electrical, hormonal, and chemical reactions of our nervous system, our body. Our mind translates and chooses how to respond to those feelings, reactions and emotions. The mind mediates our relationship to our body, soul and to our environment. The soul speaks through the body, the mind translates and chooses in response to the soul that is speaking through the body. Ideally, all three work and flow with the grace and fluidity of a principal ballet dancer.
So maybe a breakdown in health occurs when our mind makes decisions that are not in the best interests of ourselves, our truths, or our souls. Our mind exercises free will. It can always go against the mission of the soul, but there is always a price to pay. Your soul is all-knowing...it knows when you have gone against it's purest expression....and it will remind you!
But at the end of the day, we revert to pure soul energy, pure oneness, without the body and mind. I guess that is our saving grace.
